PLEASURE ISLAND HAPPENINGS!

On October 30th at 4:00 p.m., the NC State School of Design will make their final presentation on their findings for the possible future economic development of the B-1 district for Kure Beach. Shanty’s Beach and Blues Club to Host Halloween Party – On Saturday, October 31st from 2:00 until Midnight, Shanty’s will be hosting a Halloween party as a benefit for Shag Instructor Roan Grooms to help defray the cost of her recent hospital bills. The Craig Woolard Band, Mark Roberts & Breeze and The Fantastic Shakers will be appearing along with Deejays Joey Warren and Steve Carter. Singes are %15.00 and couples are $25.00. There will be $2 domestic beer, $1 12 oz. draft beer, $3 wine and $3 margaritas. Additionally hot dogs and pizza will be served for a donation. Microtel is offering $40 room for the night which includes a shuttle ride. Costumes are welcome and there will be a contest with prizes awarded.

Surfhouse Presents a Halloween Movie Fest – On Saturday, October 31st from 6:30 p.m. until ?, Surfhouse present a Halloween Movie Fest featuring such favorites as "The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown", The Simpsons in "Tree House of Horrors" and "Beetle Juice". Fourth Annual Holiday Walk is Coming – On November 22nd, from Noon until 6:00 p.m., the deals will be plentiful in Carolina Beach during the Annual Holiday Walk. Boardwalk Makeover Presents the 1st Annual Christmas by the Sea – Beginning Friday, November 27th, at 8:00 p.m., following the Island of Lights’ Lighting of the Lake, the Boardwalk will come alive with holiday merriment. There will be a fire pit with story telling, hot chocolate, a live nativity scene, caroling, Santa, theatre, choral and band performances, puppet shows, arts and crafts market area and ornament making for the kids. Festivities will be held on Friday and Saturday nights from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. All boardwalk coves will be decorated thanks to area businesses and Groups. Free Assistance with Advance Care Planning – Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center is offering free assistance with advance care planning. United State Police Canine Association – The Carolina Beach and Kure Beach Police Department K-9 Units have the honor of hosting the Region 2 Police Dog Field Trials. This is the first time the Trials are being held in Carolina Beach and is a weeklong event expected to bring up to 50 K-9 teams to Pleasure Island. On October 29th at 8:00 drop by Mike Chappell Park in Carolina Beach to observe the Obedience and Agility portion of the trials.

Fisherman’s Post to Host NC Flatfish Championships – Fisherman’s Post Newspaper will be hosting their Second Annual Fall Flounder Tournament on September 18th and 19th out of Joyner Marina. Registration is Friday, September 18th or you can pre-register at Island Tackle & Hardware and the one day of fishing is Saturday, September 19th. There is over $14,000 in prize money offered. The Seventh Annual Southern Coastal Bluegrass Festival is Coming- The Thalian Association is proud to present the Seventh Annual Bluegrass Festival at Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area on September 19th and 20th. This years bands include A Deeper Shade of Blue, Carolina Junction, The Hagar’s Mountain Boys, Ken Scoggins & Miller’s Creek, L Shape Lot, R.C. Town of Carolina Beach to Host Ribbon Cutting – On Friday, September 25, 2009 at 10:00 a.m., the Town of Carolina Beach will be hosting an Entryway Enhancement Project Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. The Ceremony will take place at the intersection of Lake Park Boulevard and Dow Road, in front of the CVS. The Big Beach Sweep is Coming – On September 26th at 9:00 the Annual Big Sweep will take place. Wilmington Oktoberfest is Coming to Pleasure Island – On Friday, September 25 from 5 – 9 and running through September 26 from 11 – 9, Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area will be alive with music, tents, German food and, of course, German beer! Spaten Brewery, home of the original Oktoberfest, will provide 4 styles of beer served in authentic glass steins. The Harbor Towne Fest Band, North Carolina’s premier full size Oktoberfest Blaskapelle Band, will be playing. Donations from proceeds will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network and local charities.
